Especially for Kids and Parents

That's curious. Fr. McGrath just sent out his weekly "This Week at Saint Bartholomew's" e-mail to the parish noting the week's activities, and while reading through I noticed that he had designated one of the four Ash Wednesday services as being "especially for Kids and Parents!" I've never seen anything like that before -- is it just the time, or does he have something else planned?

I have a couple of kid-friendly activities planned. One of them I learned at Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, and that is for kids to put away the word "Alleluia" into a jar for safe keeping during Lent, and then we'll open it up again on Easter. I'm going to add to this the word "Gloria", for "Gloria in excelsis", which we also put on hold until Easter. Our "Alleluias" and our "Glorias" will hopefully ring all the more merrily, come Eastertide.

We also read the story of Jonah for the kids, and put together a Jonah puzzle, purchased for the occasion. This is because Jonah 3 & 4 were listed in our lectionary for Evensong on Ash Wednesday. We had lots of fun (not sure if that's appropriate on Ash Wednesday) with 9 kids and 12 adults at that Service.

Note on Incense: although some of our parishoners tend to cough, clear their throats, and dive rather ostentatiously for the windows whenever I use incense, I do hope for some "smells and bells" on Easter!

In my defense at St. Matthias-I was sick and had a runny nose, thus the diving for the tissue box!

I love the Smells & Bells. You could swing every Sunday, and get no gripes from the Miller Menagerie.
